If you can identify the correct option within a second from among the ones given in the topic, you are likely not to be bad at spelling. If you miss the question, I will still not say you are terribly bad at it. The fact is that many people find the word too tricky to handle, spelling-wise.
Whether as a country or nationality, it presents the challenge of whether or not it should parade one r or double as well as one b or double. The simple answer, as some of us are likely to have checked online, is that the term has a single r but double b: Caribbean.
It is one of the names of countries/nationalities that can be difficult to spell. You should thus watch the spelling and those of other examples I will add. For instance, is footballer Suarez a Uruaguean or Uraguaen? Or a Uroguan? The country is simply spelt Uruguay, and the nationality, Uruguayan. Link that to when confronted with Myanmar, Montenegro, Seychelles, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg etc.
You need to crosscheck your spellings each time you have to reflect the names of the countries in writing.
Africa also has some countries with intriguing spellings. Our dear ‘Ghana’ is easy to spell, but the nationality question makes it dramatic: Ghananian, Ghanian, Ghanian or what? The temptation is to say Ghana-nian, and then write it as pronounced. This is wrong because the correct expression is Gha-naian: Ghanaian. So, remember, it is not a Ghananian but a Ghanaian.
Niger Republic also deserves some patience. Because the name is a bit similar to Nigeria, mix-ups do arise. This is to the extent that Nigerians who are used to spelling their nationality accordingly (Nigerians), still write ‘Nigerian’ for the brother from the Niger Republic, when they should write Nigerien.
Lastly, be careful when handling names of countries with French connection, including Sierra Leone and Cote d’Ivoire.
